Large print Crossword, with clues you can hear

These crosswords are built for comfortable solving. The squares are big, the letters are bold, and the clue you are working on is always shown at the top of the puzzle in large type, so you never have to search a list for it. Press Read clue and your device will say it aloud, along with its number and how many letters it has. You can enlarge everything further with the A+ button at the top of the page.

Tap a square to start a word, and tap the same square again to switch between Across and Down. Type on your keyboard or use the on-screen letter pad, and the cursor moves along the word for you. The arrow buttons beside the clue step to the next or previous word, and you can tap any clue in the lists to jump straight to it. When a word is complete its clue is crossed off.

Five themes, three sizes

Choose from Golden Age Entertainment, Proverbs and Everyday Idioms, Classic Literature and Authors, Home, Crafts and Workshop, or World Travel and Heritage. Every clue was written by us for this site, in plain everyday English. Easy is a small 5 by 5 grid with just a handful of short words. Medium is a 7 by 7 grid, and Hard is a 9 by 9 grid with more and longer words. Every puzzle uses a fresh arrangement of words. The free daily Crossword is Easy, and members will be able to play every size in all five themes.

Hints, saving and streaks

If you are stuck, press Hint once to see a square that needs attention, and press it again to have its letter filled in. Hints are always your choice, and they only affect the stars you earn: three stars for none, two for one or two, and one for more. With Auto-Check on, a wrong letter is marked at once with a dashed border and a line through it; switch it off if you would rather check when you are ready. The timer counts up, never down, and Zen Mode hides it. Free players keep their progress on their own device; members also get a daily streak, and their scores and history on every device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fill in a word?
Tap any square, then type on your keyboard or use the letter pad. The cursor moves along the word for you. Tap the same square again to switch between Across and Down, or tap a clue in the list to jump to it. On a keyboard, the arrow keys move around, Tab goes to the next word and Space turns the direction.
Can the clues be read aloud?
Yes. Press Read clue and your device will say the clue, its number and how many letters it has, if your browser supports speech. The clue you are working on is also always shown in large type above the grid.
What are the sizes and levels?
Easy is a 5 by 5 grid with a few short words. Medium is 7 by 7, and Hard is 9 by 9 with more and longer words. The free daily Crossword is Easy, and members will be able to play every size in all five themes.
Can I get a hint?
Yes. Press Hint once to mark a square in the current word that is empty or wrong, and press it again to fill it in. The Hint button shows how many hints you have used so far. Hints are unlimited. They only change the stars you earn: three stars for none, two for one or two, and one for three or more.
Who writes the clues?
