Learn to play: how to solve a cryptogram

Large print Cryptogram, with a helping hand

A cryptogram is a short saying in secret code. Every letter of the alphabet has been swapped for a different letter, and your job is to work out the swaps and read the message. Here the letters are big and bold, with your guess in the large box and the coded letter printed just underneath, so you never have to hunt for the letter you are working on. You can make them larger still with the A+ button at the top of the page.

Type a letter, or tap it on the on-screen pad, and every matching square in the puzzle fills in at once. That saves a great deal of rubbing out. If you put the same guess against two different coded letters, both squares get a dashed outline, so you can spot the muddle before it grows. Backspace, the Erase key and Undo are always there, and nothing is ever lost by trying something.

Five themes, three levels

Choose from Timeless Wisdom, Historical Speeches, Classic Theater Lines, Literary and Poetry, or Humorous Observations. Every quotation comes from a traditional proverb, or from a work published in 1930 or earlier, apart from the humorous lines, which we wrote ourselves. The credit is shown when you solve the puzzle. Easy, the free daily level, uses the shortest sayings and gives you three letters to start with. Medium, for members, uses longer ones with one letter given. Hard uses the longest quotations and gives you no letters at all.

Hints, saving and streaks

If you are stuck, press Hint once to highlight the most useful coded letter to try next, and press it again to have its answer filled in. Hints are always your choice, and they only affect the stars you earn: three stars for none, two for one or two, and one for more. The timer counts up, never down, and Zen Mode hides it. Your progress is saved on your own device after every letter, so you can stop at any time and pick up where you left off. Free players keep their progress on their own device; members also get a daily streak, and their scores and history on every device.

Frequently asked questions

How does a cryptogram work?
A cryptogram is a saying in which every letter has been swapped for a different letter. The same coded letter always stands for the same real letter, and no letter stands for itself. Work out the swaps and you can read the message. Some letters are already filled in to get you started, and you will find that short words and common letters are the best clues.
What happens when I type a letter?
Every square with the same coded letter fills in at once, so you only need to decide each letter one time. To change your mind, select any square and type another letter, or press Backspace or Erase. Undo steps back through your last twenty moves.
What is the dashed outline?
If you use the same guess for two different coded letters, both are outlined with a dashed line. In a cryptogram each real letter appears only once in the code, so one of the two must be wrong. It is a gentle warning, not a mistake counter.
Can I get a hint?
Yes. Press Hint once to highlight a useful coded letter, and press it again to have its answer filled in. The Hint button shows how many hints you have used so far. Hints are unlimited. They only change the stars you earn: three stars for none, two for one or two, and one for three or more.
Where do the quotations come from?
They are traditional proverbs, or lines from works published in 1930 or earlier, which are in the public domain, apart from the humorous observations, which we wrote ourselves. The author and source are shown when you solve each puzzle.
