About this set

For many people the 1950s are the years of the first television in the living room, a new suburb and a Saturday night at the drive-in. This set of ten word searches revisits that world with words like DINER, MALTS, JIVE, POODLE, CHROME, CRUISE, FENCE, PATIO and ROCKET. Others come from the sock hop, the record player and the family wagon. Each page has six words to find in an eight by eight grid.

Memories are the point, so the puzzles are made to be shared: read a word aloud, ask who had a car with fins, who danced the jive, who remembers the first record they bought. The Easy level helps, because words run only left to right or top to bottom, and the large print makes a group session comfortable. Grid letters are 36 point and the word list is 24 point, with tick boxes.

The full PDF has the ten puzzles first and then an Answers section with the hidden words shaded; a puzzles-only version is available too. We use general words about the decade, not brand names or the names of living people, and the list was written for this site.

What is in the download

  • 10 puzzles, one on each page, each with six words to find in a grid of very large letters.
  • An Answers section of 3 pages at the end of the full PDF, with the hidden words shaded.
  • A second PDF with the puzzles only, for handing out.
  1. Open the PDF (or save it) and choose Print. The pages are US Letter, 8.5 by 11 inches.
  2. On A4 paper, or if a margin is cut off, choose “Fit to page” (or “Fit”). Otherwise choose “Actual size” or 100 percent, which keeps the type at its full large size.
  3. Choose black and white or grayscale. The puzzles need no color, and it saves ink.
  4. Print one page per sheet. “Multiple pages per sheet” makes the letters small again.
  5. To print only the puzzles, print the puzzles-only file, or in the full file print just the pages before the section called Answers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the nostalgia 1950s word search printable really free?
Yes. Download it, print it and share it for personal or group use at no cost, with no account and no email address needed. Today’s Easy puzzle of every kind is also free to play on screen.
Are the answers included?
The full PDF has all 10 puzzles first and then a section titled Answers, 3 pages long, so the full file is 13 pages. If you would rather not print the answers, use the puzzles-only file.
Can I print these for a class, club or care home?
Yes. Personal use and group use are both free, as long as you keep the credit line “Puzzles from Senior Puzzles Daily (seniorpuzzlesdaily.com)” on what you share. Please do not sell the puzzles or republish them as your own.
Do the words run backwards or on a slant?
No. This is the Easy level, so every word reads left to right or top to bottom, never backwards and never diagonally. Each word appears in its grid exactly once.
How big is the print?
The grid letters are 36 point and the word list is 24 point, in a grid 8 x 8 squares that fills the page. On A4 paper, print with “Fit to page”.
