Large print Word Fill-In: no clues, just fitting

A word fill-in is a crossword with the clues taken away. You get an empty grid with black and white squares and a list of words, and every word in the list belongs in exactly one place. There is nothing to look up and nothing to know. The puzzle is only to see where each word fits, so it suits anyone who likes order and patience more than trivia.

Here the list is made of big buttons. Tap a word, then tap a square of the place where it should go, and it drops in. You can also tap a place first and then the word. A word will not go in if one of its letters would not match a word that crosses it, so a wrong choice shows itself at once. Tap a placed word in the list to take it out again, and a Clear word button empties the place you have selected.

Count the letters, then follow the crossings

The list is sorted by length, shortest first, because length is the first clue: a word of seven letters can only go in a place of seven squares. Start with a length that has only one word and one place, then use the letters it gives you to find the words that cross it. Every puzzle has exactly one solution, so you never have to guess. When every word is in, the grid turns green, with a tick as well as the colour.

Three levels

Easy is a 5 by 5 grid with six to eight short words, and it is the level that is free every day. Medium is 6 by 6 and Hard is 7 by 7, with longer words and more crossings; members will be able to play every level. There are no themes: the words come from all of our own lists, plain and well known. The timer counts up, never down, and it can be hidden with Zen Mode.

Hints and saving

If you are stuck, press Hint. If a word in the grid does not belong, it is taken out; otherwise one right word is placed for you. Hints are always your choice, and they only affect the stars you earn: three stars for none, two for one or two, and one for more. Your progress is saved on your own device after every word, so you can stop at any time and carry on later, and finishing a puzzle each day builds your streak.

Frequently asked questions

How does a Word Fill-In work?
You get a grid with black and white squares and a list of words, and no clues. Every word in the list goes into exactly one place, and the words that cross share a letter. Tap a word, then tap a square of the place where it should go. When every word is in and every crossing agrees, you have finished.
How do I find where a word goes?
Count the letters. A word with five letters can only go in a place with five squares. Start with the longest word or with a length that has only one word, then use the letters it gives you to the words that cross it. Every puzzle has exactly one solution, so you never have to guess.
What if I put a word in the wrong place?
Tap the word in the list again to take it out, or tap its place and press Clear word. A word will not go in if one of its letters would not match a word that crosses it, so a wrong word shows itself quickly. Nothing is marked against you.
Can I get a hint?
Yes. Press Hint: if a word in the grid does not belong, it is taken out; otherwise one right word is placed for you. The Hint button shows how many hints you have used so far, and hints only change the stars you earn, never what you can play.
Is it free, and is my progress saved?
A free Easy Word Fill-In is waiting every day, with no account and no ads. The words you have placed and your time are saved as you play, so you can close the page and carry on later on the same device.
