About this set

These eight small crosswords are made for the season of candles and carols. The clues are about the tree and the fireside and the Christmas story: “Burning part of a candle” (FLAME), “Toy on tracks under the tree” (TRAIN), “Winged messenger in the nativity scene” (ANGEL), “Young woolly animal” (LAMB) and “Desert animal with a hump” (CAMEL). Other answers are the cheerful words of the season, such as MERRY, CHEER, PEACE and SONG.

Every puzzle has a five by five grid and four to six clues, printed in type of 20 point or larger below the grid. That keeps a crossword short enough for a quiet half hour and large enough to read in the glow of the tree lights. All the clues were written for this site in plain English and none is copied from a published puzzle. These puzzles were made for print and are not in the daily series on screen.

The full PDF has the eight puzzles followed by an Answers section, four filled grids to a page, and a second puzzles-only file is included for handing out. They are good for a Christmas party at the senior center, a family afternoon or a gift in a card. The sheets are free to print for yourself or for a group, with the credit line kept on what you share.

How to print these puzzles

Open the PDF (or save it) and choose Print. The pages are US Letter, 8.5 by 11 inches.
On A4 paper, or if a margin is cut off, choose “Fit to page” (or “Fit”). Otherwise choose “Actual size” or 100 percent, which keeps the type at its full large size.
Choose black and white or grayscale. The puzzles need no color, and it saves ink.
Print one page per sheet. “Multiple pages per sheet” makes the letters small again.
To print only the puzzles, print the puzzles-only file, or in the full file print just the pages before the section called Answers.
